WHAT IS A JUBILEE?

A jubilee is a biblical concept, a cyclical time of rebirth, and forgiveness of spiritual and economic debts. The year served as a reboot for society; it was an opportunity for rebalancing and resetting accumulated inequities. In the modern era, Pope Francis declared 2025 a year of jubilee, offering the faithful an opportunity to purify their souls and avoid purgatory.

If President Donald J. Trump declares a year of jubilee for the United States, he can deliver what the pope is unable to do; dispense forgiveness for America’s economic debts and “proclaim liberty throughout the land.”

OUR DEBTS CREATE POVERTY

Although the people of the United States have borrowed tens of trillions of dollars over the last 50 years, poverty remains widespread. In 2025, more than one-third of Americans are financially struggling, including 12 million children living below the poverty line—about $32,000 for a family of four. This borrowing fuels a system which generates poverty instead of promoting prosperity, or what the Framers called “the general welfare.”

Poverty makes everyday problems worse:

    • Children struggle to learn.
    • Crime increases.
    • Relationships become stressed.
    • Health outcomes decline.
    • Workers make more mistakes.
    • Even IQ scores can drop.

POVERTY EQUALS ECONOMIC STRESS

When people live under constant financial pressure, it becomes harder to think long-term and plan for the future. Limited options can make it more difficult to make good decisions in the present.

The Trump administration is under economic stress, too. They’ve inherited a looming debt ceiling crisis and a national debt of $36 trillion—which cost the government $1.1 trillion in interest payments last year alone.

Just like American families, our country is trapped in a system where debt promotes instability.

THE NATIONAL DEBT IS THEFT

Every day, the United States spends $10 per citizen—more than $14,000 annually for a family of four—to pay interest on the national debt. Money that could go to schools, roads, or healthcare is deposited into the accounts of the wealthiest institutions and individuals. Meanwhile, families carry trillions in household debt, spending $100 billion annually just on credit card interest.

Where did all this debt come from? It’s a rigged game—money is manufactured by banks, borrowed from nothing and then lent out at interest. This is fraud, but a jubilee is an opportunity to change the rules.

President Donald Trump can fix it by reclaiming the sovereign power of the US Treasury to issue money and ending the Federal Reserve’s monopoly. No more borrowing money out of thin air. No more theft.

A citizen’s dividend will ease everyone’s economic stress and ensure each adult gets individual debt forgiveness. With some financial breathing room, the United States can collectively catch its breath and reevaluate our priorities during the year of jubilee.

A CITIZENS’ DIVIDEND CAN FORGIVE OUR DEBTS

Over the last 50 years, the people of the United States accumulated $47 trillion in household and publicly held federal debt. A jubilee is a year for rebalancing the scales, and if America’s 47th president is persuaded to declare one, he can give the country the reset it desperately needs. On his authority, a $47 trillion platinum coin can be minted and deposited in the US Treasury. That’s enough to retire all outstanding debt as it comes due, making the debt ceiling irrelevant.

Anyone who cares about government efficiency should want to stop wasting $1,100 billion in annual interest payments.

This $47 trillion dividend, created by the economy’s productivity, belongs to the shareholders of the United States—its citizens. As the national debt falls, the additional money must be returned to the people as unconditional basic income (UBI). That means no paperwork, no means testing, and no strings attached!

FORGIVE THE SINNERS

A year of jubilee must also look at our spiritual debts; mass incarceration is a moral stain on our nation. More than two-thirds of voters say reducing the prison population is important, and during his first term, Donald Trump signed the First Step Act, giving tens of thousands a second chance.

By the end of the jubilee year, most imprisoned Americans can earn a second chance. With UBI building an economic floor under all Americans, the formerly incarcerated will be better prepared for success as families are reunited.

In addition, the year of jubilee would offer forgiveness to long-term residents living in the US without permission. The State Department reports that more than 70% of unauthorized migrants arrived here before President Trump ever took office. Two-thirds of voters say we should create a path for citizenship for those who’ve been here a decade or more—people who’ve stayed out of trouble for years and put down local roots are the neighbors who strengthen our communities.

MOVING PAST PARTISAN POLITICS

Americans have lost faith in a political process that prioritizes partisan victories over enacting policy solutions. Since the late 20th century, Congress has willfully failed to address our biggest problems. Through the jubilee, we can install a much needed political upgrade for the 21st century.

In a post-partisan America, a union of concerned citizens would use 12 metrics to identify shared goals, then negotiate directly with President Trump while writing the appropriate legislation to address them. When a deal is crafted, the president’s political power must be used to pass the agreed-upon legislation through Congress. In return, the union of citizens will vote as a bloc to reelect incumbents of both parties who helped President Trump enact the legislation, while any members of Congress who oppose his efforts could be replaced with their strongest challenger. This will incentivize Congress to deliver better outcomes for our country.

A jubilee offers the United States a clean slate, if enough people are willing to take action.

REBOOTING AMERICA

In the early days of computers, pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL was sometimes the only solution for a malfunctioning system. Resetting a computer served as a jubilee; an amnesty for corrupted codes and a clearing of accumulated errors. Such a combination of keys could not be pressed by accident; a demonstration of sustained intention was required. Only then would the operating systems be reborn like a phoenix.

To fully reboot America’s political and economic systems so that modern upgrades can be installed, three national actions must be taken June 14-15:

CTRL – a 24-hour fast to demonstrate individual self-control and a desire for peace.

ALT – a national toast with Trump to push the US into an alternate political reality.

DEL – a one-day general strike to turn off our economy before turning it back on.

Citizens willing to help reboot America are asked to sign up for one of these three events, and work with your team to plan and share your event across digital and physical spaces.

NOW OUR COUNTRY CAN DO THIS
The United States invented itself in 1776 with George Washington. We upgraded our moral code in 1865 thanks to Abraham Lincoln. Our economic foundation was reinforced in the 1930s through FDR. In 2025, it’s time to renew the promise of democracy through a jubilee. Let’s reboot the system and launch a future that serves us all. Will Donald J. Trump lead the nation into jubilee on June 14? Will Donald J. Trump build an America for the 100%?
